Let's Talk Basho

Opens October 3rd 2022 with a technical video on Basho, the scalability era, ahead of CNFT Con and Rare Bloom.

Two eras remain, Voltaire for governance with the MBO, constitution, and CIPs, and Basho for scalability, run concurrently, with more at the November Cardano Summit.

Basho includes diffusion pipelining shipped with Vasil, a spectrum with more optimizations, and Plutus improvements with v2 out, v3 in 2023, and a 10x script-size reduction.

Cardano is already in the Basho era, with Mithril on the horizon approaching version 1, SPOs testing it, and an open-source project materializing.

Rebuts Reddit claims that Mithril achieves nothing, calling it one of Basho's biggest pillars that creates a layer-1.x overlay to construct proof certificates.

Instead of 3 million on-chain governance votes, Mithril constructs them off-chain and aggregates them into a single threshold-signature transaction with the same trust.

Mithril's current special case is light clients and fast bootstrap, giving light clients full-node security via a networking, proof-construction, and commit framework that enables many-to-one.

Plutus v2's reference inputs, reference scripts, and inline datums do the same many-to-one compression, turning 500 transactions into one.

Plutus has an on-chain script plus off-chain coordinating infrastructure like Ethereum, and that Hydra is part of that off-chain kit, embedded in dapps needing scale for many-to-one voting, DEXes, and payments.

An off-chain acceleration network like Lightning, the Hydra tail protocol, is being explored, but that high throughput in 2023 means the whole architecture rather than just one overlay.

The design spans Plutus itself, the extended UTXO model, and off-chain infrastructure with an on-chain Hydra head, so embedding a Hydra head in a dapp turns lots of things into one, lowering cost and raising speed.

Several Cardano dapp developers work directly with the Hydra team, with Obsidian making open-source commits, so Hydra becomes a full community-built open-source program.

Mithril and Hydra are closely related with shared teams, but the biggest throughput contributor is input endorsers, not needed in 2023 since diffusion pipelining, Plutus, Mithril, and Hydra already give high effective TPS.

The naive 9-TPS claim ignores that real impact is dozens to hundreds of TPS via chained scripts, and that the input-endorser CIPs are being written after design workshops in September in California and June in Edinburgh.

Ben Beckman, IO head of architecture, is translating the design into CIPs with simulation, since input endorsers completely reimagine the chain of blocks into asynchronous parallel processing batched together.

Input blocks and key blocks from the parallel-chains paper batch events like Mithril certificates, giving conflict-free history and asynchronous parallel processing of enormous events.

Only 0.25 percent of block time is currently for script execution, a scarce resource, which input endorsers make continuous asynchronous execution for a very significant speed increase.

The key challenge is doing this without a Solana-style stall while preserving or increasing decentralization, with a design goal of a larger K meaning more SPOs despite continuous execution.

Mithril is essential because the growing blockchain needs fast bootstrap and light-client support, so the Mithril and Hydra programs continue all through 2023 as components of input endorsers.

Calls the input-endorser CIPs the final milestone of Basho, making Cardano competitive against the top 15 cryptocurrencies including Solana and scalable for five to ten years, tied to Chronos, fast finality via Ledger Redux, and Ouroboros Omega.

November announces the CIPs for a community conversation, since input endorsers change SPO logic, reward mechanisms, and staking, requiring Voltaire to ratify, with DCSpark interested in reviewing.

Side chains use Ouroboros to bootstrap, taking a set K of SPOs as a BFT quorum with a bridge to move value, alongside Babel fees and tiered pricing resetting the fee model.

Side chains hold their own business logic and transaction volume in parallel without consuming main-chain resources, like a super-Hydra for EVM, privacy, supply chain, loyalty, or NFTs, with a canonical bridge to Cardano native assets.

Once side chains launch, staking rewards go from just ADA to all the coins the SPOs contributed to, since they earn fees maintaining side-chain state, requiring updated staking certificates via the MBO.

Sums up that Basho is interconnected, from diffusion pipelining and UTXO-HD and Plutus efficiency to Mithril and Hydra going many-to-one, to input endorsers moving to a more-decentralized parallel architecture that prevents stalls.

You get speed without compromising decentralization and real-time continuous computation, going from 0.25 percent to continuous execution, while side chains pay rent to the main chain in their tokens.

Calls it the best scaling plan in crypto, borrowing from the roll-up, snark, and Lightning communities but doing it cheaper via dapp-specific approaches, with input endorsers rolling up five years of parallel-processing research and bridge quorums using protocols like Paula by Elaine Shi's team and OBFT.

2023 will be insanely active, with a Cardano Summit presentation called The Age of Voltaire harnessing the community through CIPs, a constitution, and the MBO, and Basho giving Voltaire a Mithril and Hydra application to bring Catalyst voting on-chain.

The 2023 goal is a tricameral governance model fully endorsed by the community, the primary USP since Ethereum's Vitalik decided on-chain governance is a fool's errand, so Cardano competes by harnessing three million people.

To ignore the ghost-chain noise, since Ethereum spent seven years with 10x resources for an inferior custodial non-liquid staking model while Cardano solved it in 2020 and now scales with network speed via Mithril as a growing framework.

Cardano realized Bitcoin's color-coins vision via native assets, Lightning via Hydra, and inclusive accountability where you are your own node and bank, with input endorsers scaling to billions while getting more decentralized, realizing Satoshi's outline.

Obsidian's third-party Hydra contributions show it is real, and that the MBO brings innovation like wallet and node certification and active specs, with identity a huge untouched topic.
